Gakenke is an exquisite Red Bourbon coffee from the Kayanza region of Burundi, cultivated at 1,500–1,800 meters by 1,780 smallholder farmers working alongside Greenco Coffee. These farmers, each tending an average of 250 coffee trees, are spread across 22 hills in the Gatare commune, where the rich volcanic soil and high elevation create the perfect conditions for complex and vibrant coffees.
The Process:
Established in 1991, Gakenke Washing Station is known for its commitment to high-quality processing. With 224 drying beds, 2 flotation tanks, 10 fermentation tanks, and 2 soaking tanks, the station has the capacity to process up to 750 metric tons of coffee per season. The station’s meticulous fully washed process enhances the coffee’s clarity, floral notes, and bright acidity, resulting in a clean and well-structured cup.
The washing station plays a key role in supporting local farmers, providing technical training, cooperative strengthening, and yield improvement programs. It also participates in livestock rearing projects to help farmers diversify their income.
