Burundi - Masha

Juicy & Floral Coffee – Masha, Burundi | SCA Score 87.5

From the fertile highlands of Kayanza, Burundi, Masha is a fully washed Red Bourbon coffee grown at 1,672 meters above sea level by over 1,128 dedicated smallholder farmers. Named after the sub-hill on which the washing station is located, “Masha” stems from the Kirundi word amasho, meaning “herds of cattle”—a tribute to the region’s pastoral traditions.

Though once better known for cattle than coffee, the Masha area is now gaining international acclaim for its outstanding cup quality. Thanks to rigorous quality control on both farms and at the station, the resulting coffee is consistently juicy, clean, and full-bodied.

Built in 1989, the Masha Washing Station is part of the Greenco network and has played a pivotal role in transforming the livelihoods of local subsistence farmers, who often intercrop coffee with food and cash crops. The station also provides organic compost made from coffee pulp, and supports planting renewal programs with seedlings sourced from ISABU, helping to rejuvenate aging trees and sustain future production.
SCA: 87.5
